Eat and Drink
Coffee
Just north on Sussex Terrace is 3fe - a decent local coffee chain.
If you want to go further afield, Nick’s Coffee in Ranelagh is about 15 minutes walk and does an excellent flat white and a pastry to go. It’s right by Ranelagh Gardens if you want to watch the ducks while you eat.
Breakfast
Cinnamon in Ranelagh does brunch from 8:30 on weekdays, porridge, pancake, eggs, bacon.
Brother Hubbard is the new place in Ranelagh. They do interesting middle-eastern dishes, as well as porridge, egg & bacon-y breakfasts from 8:15am on weekdays, 10am at weekends.
If you’re heading into the town centre, Tang on Dawson Street is about 20 minutes north and does a great breakfast from 8am.
Up early? The Bald Barista opens at 7am on weekdays, does a great coffee and cooked breakfast or pastries. About a 25 minute walk, the other side of Stephen’s Green.
Cocktails
The Vintage Cocktail Club is a speakeasy style cocktail bar on Crown Alley in Temple Bar. It’s very relaxed and chill, offers a menu that’s a history lesson on cocktails and decent small and sharing plates.
Peruke & Periwig on Dawson Street, near Stephen’s Green, comes highly recommended but we’ve not tried it yet.
The Blind Pig is another speakeasy on our to-do list.
Power House Bar at Roe & Co. Roe & Co is a new-ish whiskey distillery brand, with a distillery offering tours in the Liberties, right by the Guinness megalopolis. But they also have a gorgeous cocktail bar, built inside the old generating plant for the Guinness site. Stunning space, lovely cocktails and there was plenty of space when we were there. I think people don’t know about it, or don’t know it’s a real cocktail bar open to the public.
Pubs
Taphouse. Our local. 30-odd taps of interesting craft beers and good food (tacos, burgers, flatbreads, good vegan dishes).
M O’Briens is just down the road from the hotel. Decent place, does live music some nights.
Birchall’s is a quiet local pub in Ranelagh. No TV, except during games. They do a good pint of Beamish, and a toastie if you want a light snack.
Porterhouse are a local brewery who do some great beers, including maybe half a dozen different stouts and porters. They have two pubs in the middle of town. One is in Temple Bar, and more traditional in style, the other is on Nassau Street and has been refurbished recently to be hip and trendy. Both do a great selection of their beers on tap and decent bar food.
Galway Bay Brewery brew a great selection of beer and have several bars in town. Bar Rua, The Gasworks and Against the Grain are all 20-25 minutes walk away in different directions. Good food, too.
The Brazen Head has been around since 1198. Popular with tourists, but a nice space that’ll serve a decent pint and solid food. It’s a fair way west, but if you’re heading towards Phoenix Park or the Museum of Decorative Arts and History you’re right by it.
L. Mulligan. Grocer. is a less touristy option out towards Phoenix Park. Great selection of beers, mostly local, and some excellent food.
